Gold leaf is surprisingly affordable!

Gold is about the most malleable thing out there. It can be spread extremely thin. There's probably only a few ounces of gold on that whole structure.

Back when my mother was a professional recorder player as part of some band that played in garb (often at weddings at Snuffy's Pantageous Renaissance), they once played at a gilder's induction to the gilder's guild in NYC. They had gilded everything in the place, and the final part of the ceremony was toasting the guy then showering him with gold leaf flakes.

It's also served on some of the desserts at Morimoto's :-D
